We start the process by scanning your head profile into a computer program which creates a 3D look on a computer screen. This data is sent to our factory which creates a perfect wooden mould of your head to re-create your hairline shape, crown and parting. A soft, permeable silicone cap tinted to match your skin colour is fitted to your mould and this exact fit creates the suction effect that withstands the rigours of daily life, even the strongest wind!
Untreated human hair of the finest quality is then implanted into the silicone. To create a natural look and movement that is just like the real thing, we ensure an even spread of hair by inserting just one or two hairs at a time.
Once fitted with your new prosthesis, you are ready for salon styling!
The Freedom Hair® vacuum-fit prosthesis is custom designed for each client. First, I use a hand-held laser scanner to scan the client’s head with our proprietary new technology. A hairline is drawn directly onto the scalp and shows up on the scan so that the manufacturer in New Zealand can replicate the desired hairline. The scan is then e-mailed to the factory where it is used to rout a perfect replica of the client’s head. If the client wishes, they can receive a “fit cap” in order to verify the design. Then the actual prosthesis is made according to the specifications which were ordered. Together, the client and I decide the color, length and texture of the cut ponytail, unprocessed human hair which is to be implanted strand by strand into the prosthesis. A sample of the actual hair will be sent for approval. They must also decide on the density of the implant on the front, top, sides, temples, back and nape, the direction of the implant at the front, top and sides, the location of the crown, the scalp color and consideration must be given to the final style the client wishes to achieve.
The finished all-silicone prosthesis arrives after about 3 to 4 months and then must be cut and styled by a professional hair stylist, preferably one who has some experience with the vacuum prosthesis. After styling, cutting, perming, highlighting or whatever the client wishes to do, the prosthesis can be cared for at home by the client with good quality salon products. The inside must be cleaned out with a small amount of dishwashing liquid and water every night. Once every year or two, it will need to be returned to the factory for repair/relining. This will vary depending upon the client, the care it receives and other factors. Most people try to have a second prosthesis made so that they can be rotated and the client won’t have to go without it while it is being repaired. The lifespan of the prosthesis is 3 to 5 years.
While wearing the prosthesis, the client can comfortably and securely engage in outdoor activities and sports without worrying about the security of his/her hairpiece. The client can swim underwater (chlorine pools are not good for human hair), ride in a convertible, dance, hug children etc., all without fear that their hair will come loose. The best thing, though, will be how great they will look and feel with the natural, healthy, shiny hair of their new prosthesis. They will once again be able to say, “I have great hair!”
